MLB Rumors: Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox table extension talks for now

The Boston Red Sox and ace pitcher Jon Lester have been discussing a contract extension for much of the off-season. General manager Ben Cherington previously indicated that they wanted to have things settled one way or another before Opening Day.

On Saturday Cherington indicated that the two sides have decided to table extension talks for now. That means no deal before the season starts, but Cherington did change his tune in that he said that negotiations could resume during the year.

From Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe:

Lester is coming off a huge bounce-back season in 2013, as he went 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA over a career-best 213.1 innings pitched. For his part Lester credited John Farrell for much of that success, something that bodes well for the Red Sox in their hopes to keep him around.

This winter Lester indicated a willingness to take a hometown discount to stay with the Red Sox, similar to Dustin Pedroia‘s deal. Worth noting, then, is this additional tidbit from Abraham:

If you were forced to place a bet, it seems likely a deal will get done at some point this year.
