The Marquette Golden Eagles took a shot in their coaching search this week when Shaka Smart called them up and respectfully declined their offer to take over for Buzz Williams. But that hasn’t stopped them from looking for the big names, as according to Jeff Goodman at ESPN, they are now targeting Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin.
After missing on VCU’s Shaka Smart, Marquettehas identified Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin as one of its top targets.
Should this be the case, this would be a smart move by Marquette. Martin pulled off one of the best coaching performances this season. After people were calling for his head, he led Tennessee to the Sweet 16 where they nearly pulled off the upset of Michigan on Friday night.
Also in the mix for the job is said to be former UCLA head coach Ben Howland, so there is a very good chance that Marquette will eventually land the big name that it’s looking for.
But targeting Martin is definitely a move of striking while the iron is hot.
