The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the latest team to add their names to the list of teams possibly interested in signing free agent receiver DeSean Jackson. After the Eagles cut him and then kicked dirt all over his reputation by skating around allegations the release was related to concerns about gang activity, the rest of the NFL seems to realize what Jackson’s release was really about and aren’t concerning themselves too much with his off-field behavior.
That doesn’t mean Jackson isn’t a questionable character at times, but showboating on the field and being related to gangs off it are two wildly different things. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are being cautious about Jackson but have already expressed interest in at least checking him out.
“I’ve had a chance to be on the other side of the field and have watched him make a lot of great plays,” coach Lovie Smith said Friday, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “He’s a great football player. Of course, we look at everyone we think can help us win.”
Tampa Bay was gleaming about Jackson’s availability but it’s clear that they have some sort of interest. His off-field issues are alarming if only for the fact that the Bucs are notorious in the recent past for off-field issues. But it really depends on if the allegations are true or not, as Jackson’s prowess on the field is undeniably attractive.
