Cleveland Indians place Jason Giambi on 15-day disabled list

The Cleveland Indians will open up the 2014 regular season on the road in a three game series tomorrow night against the Oakland Athletics.

But before they get this show on the road, they’ll make a couple roster moves. They have placed outfielder Michael Bourn on the 15-day disabled list, a move that’s retroactive to March 21st. He was placed on the disabled list with a left hamstring injury, but has been doing some fielding and hitting drills over the last week or so.

Once he’s healthy, he’ll become the teams primary center fielder.

The Indians purchased the contract of future Hall of Fame designated hitter/first baseman Jason Giambi and placed him on the 15-day disabled list. This move is also retroactive to March 21st, as he was placed on the DL with a fractured rib. The old timer wanted to come back to Cleveland for at least another year and got his wish as he was picked up on a Minor League contract.

Right handed pitcher Scott Atchison had his contract purchased from Triple-A Columbus after he earned a spot on the Major League roster by posting a solid 2.70 ERA this Spring. He’ll work out of the bullpen.

Outfielder Nyjer Morgan also had his contract purchased from Triple-A Columbus. Morgan only hit .208/.333/.292 across the line this Spring but will fill in for Bourn until he’s able to return to the lineup.
