Colorado State Rams head coach Jim McElwain told the The Coloradoan on Saturday that running back Donnell Alexander, the team’s second-leading rusher in 2013, has been granted a release from his scholarship.
The news comes one day after Kim Alexander, Donnell’s mother, told the paper that her son received a lack of support from the team’s coaches during a recent personal tragedy:
“Donnell had a tragic event happen with his sister and what put the icing on the cake for him was that when that situation happened, he didn’t get any support from CSU. That made his decision. Donnell doesn’t want people to think he’s going to come and play for CSU, because he’s not.
“Any report that says he doesn’t have a release is wrong. I have it in my hand.”
Alexander rushed for 428 yards and two touchdowns last season and was expected to be the starting running back in 2014.
