Veteran netminder Martin Brodeur is set to watch his contract with the New Jersey Devils expire, but he is still “80-percent sure”that he will be returning to the league next season to continue his impressive career.
While Brodeur would obviously love to return to the team he has spent his entire career playing for, he is ready to test the free agent market if they do not want him back.
“It all depends on what is on the table, whether it’s in New Jersey or somewhere else. I’m open-minded about it,” Brodeur said, via Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger. “I’m looking for specific things some teams probably can’t give me. And that’s understandable at my age. But if I feel I can play and people want me, we’ll see.”
Brodeur certainly has some quality hockey left in the tank as his save percentage this year indicates, but at 41 years old he is unlikely to land somewhere that would give him a starting job.
He will need to come to that realization.
