After losing Buzz Williams to the ACC and the Virginia Tech Hokies last week, the Marquette Golden Eagles know that their open job in considered one of the best out there, and they’re going to take advantage of that by talking to some of the biggest names out there about coming in to take over the program.
According to ESPN, they took a big step in that direction on Sunday as they met with Tennessee Volunteers head coach, Cuonzo Martin.
Marquetteofficials met Sunday with Tennesseecoach Cuonzo Martin, and there is significant interest from the Golden Eagles in hiring Martin away from the Vols, multiple sources told ESPN.com.
Martin is coming off leading the Volunteers on a tremendous run through the NCAA Tournament, which culminated in a heartbreaking loss to the second-seeded Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet 16 of the Midwest Region.
Despite the success at the end of the season, though, Martin was berated when the Vols were having a lackluster regular season, with some fans even going so far as getting a petition together to have him fired and replaced by Bruce Pearl, who ended up taking the Auburn job.
