NCAA Basketball Rumors: Tennessee could target Gregg Marshall if Cuonzo Martin leaves

As we saw in the NCAA Tournament, the Tennessee Volunteers Men’s basketball program is on the cusp of something great. They were a mere seconds away from the Elite 8. But, there are heavy rumors lately that head coach Cuonzo Martin may indeed become the next head coach of the Marquette Golden Eagles, leaving this thriving program without a leader.

So, in which direction would they turn? Well, with the success they tasted this season, and knowing how far they can go with building this program, there’s only one man they can turn to.

The mere definition of a program-builder the last two years, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall, as ESPN’s Jeff Goodman immediately pointed out on Monday.

This would be the smartest move they could possibly make, it would just all come down to whether or not Marshall wants to leave the Shockers after all he’s put in. And if he does want to leave, is Tennessee the right fit.

There’s a lot to chew on with this theory, but it certainly makes sense given all the circumstances involved.

He’s turned down UCLA, Minnesota & NC State. There’s no way he wants to be at Tennessee if he doesn’t want to go to big basketball schools like that.

Tennessee? Maybe a Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky or Kansas when one of them opens up but Tennessee? He already has a program equal to Tennessee so it doesn’t really make much sense because WIchita is paying him more than most already. Besides Cuonzo will stay at Tennessee he’s just getting the most mileage out of his sweet 16 appearance for an extended contract.

21,000 thousand seat Arena is why he would come to the Vol Nation…..Go Vols

This coming from a hack reporter who has said time and time again that the coaching ranks dislike him.Gregg Marshall is loved in Wichita, if everyone dislikes him why would he leave Wichita for a low level SEC job. That they only way to win is to lie and cheat like Bruce Pearl.

I could see Marshall taking the job, but Tennessee would have to meet all the stipulations for his standards to lure him away from Wichita. Wichita State is this good for a reason, because the University has been willing to invest the resources needed to give Marshall all the tools necessary for him to maximize his potential. For the Vols that could mean diverting resources from one or more of their athletic programs to invest in their basketball program. Sometimes schools gotta invest more in 1 sport above all others to stake their identity in. Like the Jayhawks, football is just there at Kansas to ensure they stay in a BCS conference and that’s about it. Their identity is staked in basketball, just like Kentucky, while Alabama is the complete opposite.
