Tommy Hunter named Orioles' closer

After backing out of their contract with Grant Balfour, the Orioles chose to look internal to solve their closing problem.

Although manager Buck Showalter would not officially name who the closer was throughout Spring Training, it was evident that there was really only one choice. Today, Showalter named his 9th inning guy.

The hard-throwing right-hander Hunter has been a staple of the Orioles bullpen since coming over from the Texas Rangers. In Texas, Hunter was a starter but had to be converted to the relief role when he came to Baltimore. It was in the bullpen that Hunter decided to ‘air it all out’ and began throwing harder and at a higher velocity, making him a formidable weapon at the back end of the bullpen.

Last season, Hunter pitched in 86 innings for Baltimore with a 2.81 ERA and saving four games.
