Legendary MMA Heavyweight, Minotauro Nogueira is set to return to the UFC’s Octagon next weekend at UFC Fight Night 39. The former Pride Heavyweight champion and interim UFC Heavyweight champion returns from a nine month layoff to take on Roy Nelson in the main event in Abu Dhabi.
The last time Big Nog took an extended leave of absence was after losing to Cain Velasquez back at UFC 110. After 18 months on the sidelines, Nogueira returned to the spotlight in the grandest of fashions. For the first time in his illustrious career, Nogueira was fighting in his home country of Brazil.
That night, at UFC 134, Nogueira took on the streaking Brendan Schaub. Schaub, the TUF 10 runner up to Roy Nelson, was on a four fight winning streak including three KO/TKO’s. In his last bout coming into the fight, Schaub had knocked out legendary Heavyweight, Mirko Cro Cop.
Nogueira was not to be denied in Brazil, however, as he knocked out Schaub just three minutes into the first round. The arena roared as Nogueira cheered and celebrated his return to the Octagon. It was truly a special moment in the history of MMA.
