Opening Day in Major League Baseball is always an exciting time for the fans and the players, but Monday night took a turn for the worst for Los Angeles Angels hitting coach Don Baylor. Vladimir Guerrero, who signed a one-day contract to retire with the Angels, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the game with Baylor making the catch.
Unfortunately, Baylor was injured during the pitch and suffered a broken right leg.
Baylor will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Don right now,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, via ESPN.com. “Obviously it’s a freak (injury). We’ll see how it turns out.”
Guerrero appeared to think Baylor was joking when he first struggled to get back to his feet, but it quickly became clear that he was truly injured.
Baylor is a multiple myeloma survivor, which is a cancer that attacks bone marrow.
We wish Baylor the best as he prepares for surgery on Tuesday and wish him a full and speedy recovery.
