Clay Guida is in the midst of a difficult run in the UFC. Since defeating Anthony Pettis back in 2011, Guida has gone 1-3 against top flight competition. Since dropping down to Featherweight, Guida is 1-1, but his lone win was a controversial decision over Hatsu Hioki.
Guida gets his chance to get out of his rut next weekend when he takes on Tatsuya Kawajiri in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 39. In preparation of his feature bout, Guida joined Inside MMA on a recent show to discuss the bout with Kawajiri.
“You know, Kawajiri poses a number of problems; his strength, the fact that he is coming down a weight class. He made his debut in the UFC at 145lb, but I heard he looked a little sucked down with the weight cut, so I am hoping he hasn’t a hard time making weight again,” Guida said, via Bloody Elbow.
“I’m a 55er in a 45er’s body so I have an easier time making it. I thought the transition to 145lb that I’d be a little stronger, but I am still kind of undersized, I believe, for the featherweight division.
“He is very strong on top. I believe he is gonna have a hard time taking me down and we know my gas tank – it is going to be above fold. We’ll be ready to go three rounds hard and exciting pace, and to take him into deep water and see what he is made of.”
