Frankie Edgar on why he took Penn trilogy fight: 'I'm a yes man'

Former UFC Lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, has already defeated the former Lightweight and Welterweight champion, BJ Penn, twice. Edgar will now get his third crack at Penn, but this time at Featherweight, come July 6th at the TUF 19 Finale.

Edgar first defeated BJ Penn back at UFC 112 to become the UFC Lightweight champion. At that point, Penn had defended his title three times and was given an immediate rematch at UFC 118. Once again, Frankie Edgar defeated BJ by unanimous decision.

With two wins behind him, many questioned why Edgar would want a trilogy match with BJ, and his answer is simple (Courtesy of MMAJunkie and BloodyElbow):

I’m a yes man. My bosses ask me to do something, (and) I’m pretty much game. A fight’s a fight. B.J. is still a legend – still a stud. It’s not going to be an easy fight.

As to Edgar’s thoughts on why Penn wanted a third bout, he had this to say:

He’s a competitor. I think that people that are competitive always have a reason that they lost, and always think that they can win. I get it, but I’m a competitor too, and I’m ready to close the door on this trilogy and make it 3-0.

Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn coached against one another on the 19th season of The Ultimate Fighter which debuts on April 16 on Fox Sports 1.
