When the Dallas Mavericks signed big man Samuel Dalembert, they gave themselves a contractual out.
A talented though sometimes lazy player, the Mavericks knew that keeping the Haitian native on the straight and arrow might be trouble. And they were right as multiple times they’ve been forced to call Dalembert out, but at a reasonable price tag next season, the Mavericks have decided to keep him on the roster rather than waiving him.
The Mavs signed Dalembert to a two-year deal this summer, but only $1.8 million of the big man’s $3.87 million salary next season is guaranteed. However, Nelson said the Mavs fully intend to have Dalembert return next season.
“Absolutely we’ll have Sam back,” Nelson said of the center who is averaging 6.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 20.3 minutes per game this season.
At just under $4 million dollars, sometimes lazy or not, that’s pretty fair market price for a seven foot center.
The Mavericks aren’t likely to find much better on the open market in free agency, so the move makes understandable sense.
