Per an SI.com report, Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski is expected to be named head basketball coach at Marquette University, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Wojciechowski, who starred at Duke as a player, has been on coach Mike Krzyzewski‘s staff for 15 seasons, and had been thought to be the top candidate to replace Coach K when the time came for his retirement.
That, apparently will not happen.
The 37-year-old former Duke point guard will be replacing Buzz Williams, who in six seasons as Marquette’s head coach led the Golden Eagles to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, missing only this season. He compiled a 139-69 record in six seasons.
Although Marquette is considered a top job–certainly one of the best in the Big East–it’s almost surreal to think about someone who has been a part of Duke as both a player and coach for so long leaving Durham for another school.
Money aside, it’s probably a case of Wojciechowski just being ready to take over his own program, with Krzyzewski showing no signs of slowing – he’s publicly stated he plans on staying at least five more years.
