Streak for the Cash Picks-April 1, 2014

Your Streak for the Cash entry really is reset to zero–it’s no April Fools’ joke.  It’s just a new month to build your Streak for the Cash starting with a full day of sports pick options. There’s a fun April 1st Gift to start the month before Cricket gets underway at 9:30.  Later this afternoon, there are some cool picks from the Champions League Quarterfinals  with some props from the Man U vs Bayern Munich game.  Tonight, there are picks from the NCAA Women’s Tournament, the NIT semifinals, the NHL, the NBA, and another full day of Major League Baseball.

There are a ton of picks to start the month, so I’ll have to keep my analysis short. I’ll fill in some more details throughout the day as time allows.  With each pick, I’ve included my confidence on a scale of 1-10, and I’ve also put my March results at the bottom of the page. Good luck to you as you start your April run!

4/1 Streak Picks

3:01- Yes: Don’t overthink this one, although they may just push it or give both sides the green.  This is the first time a pick like this has been posted, so there’s no telling what the Streak powers have in mind. They did tweet about it @ESPNStreak, though, saying the odds were “Yes -100000, No +500″ Confidence-10

9:30- West IndiesIf you believe the lines, this is a coin-flip pick, so I’d stay away after the gift green unless you’re going just for most wins regardless of putting together a consecutive wins run. Confidence-3

2:45- Bayern Munich Win: Bayern is on the road at Old Trafford which usually would be a place to avoid giving the draw.  However, Man U is not playing well and Bayern is a scoring machine, so this is actually a nice pick. Confidence-6

2:45- Yes Bayern Leads at Halftime: I think Munich wins easily and probably will be ahead at halftime although its less certain than the full-game pick. Confidence-4

2:45- Barcelona win: Barca at home? Usually this is a no-brainer and I do think they’ll get the win, but its important to know that they played Atletico Madrid three times this season and all three ended in a draw. Confidence-5

3:47- Yes Man Utd scores 1+ Goals in 2nd half: I do think that Man U will get a goal in the second half even though I doubt they’ll win.  Bayern plays a pretty open style and their defense typically a little better at home than on the road. Confidence-3

7:02- Louisville Cardinals: The Terps pulled off the upset over Tennessee, but now they have to take on Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center which is their home court.  Only one team has beaten the Cardinals since December 1, but UConn did beat them three times.  Maryland’s the upstart, and they’ve proven they can pull the upset, but Louisville at home will be too much for them. Confidence-4

7:03- SMU Mustangs: SMU is favored by three as they take on Clemson in this NIT semifinal.  SMU was a snub for the tournament but have played well in the NIT.  The Mustangs edged Cal in their last game while Clemson beat Belmont by five.  Clemson has good at home, but struggled on the road and in neutral games, so I’ll take the Mustangs to get the win at Madison Square Garden tonight. Confidence-5

7:05- Colorado Avalanche: The Avs won 5-3 when they hosted the Blue Jackets and earlier this season and have won three in a row against Nashville, Vancouver, and San Jose.  The Blue Jackets have lost three of their last five although they did win on the road at Carolina in overtime. Confidence-5 1/2

7:05- Dallas Stars: Both the Stars and the Capitals are pushing to get into the playoffs, but the Stars are in better form lately.  Dallas has won four of its last five overall and their last four against the Capitals as they visit Washington who have dropped three in a row and four of their last five. Confidence-6

7:05- Toronto Maple Leafs: Toronto has dropped eight in a row and have slid out of the playoffs.  They desperately need a win, and they beat the Flames in Calgary 4-2 earlier this season. It isn’t as clear-cut as record indicates since Toronto’s in bad form, but I do think they’re the pick. Confidence-3

7:05- Florida Panthers: Neither the Panthers or the Islanders are going to play into the postseason race after disappointing seasons.  Florida has won the previous two meetings this season, so I’d take them if forced to chose. Confidence-2

7:05- Pittsburgh Penguins: The Pens have been scuffling a little lately, but they did just dominate Chicago picking up a 4-1 win.  Tonight they’ll host the Hurricanes who have been up and down all season dropping three of their last four. Confidence-7

7:10- Miami Marlins: Miami destroyed Colorado last night and now turn to Nathan Eovaldi in their second game of the season.  The Rockies look to Brett Anderson who may turn out to be a good pickup long-term, but I don’t trust him yet. Confidence-3

7:10- New York Yankees: CC Sabathia and the Yanks open in Houston as they face the Astros in a meeting of the only teams who have yet to play a game this season.  The Astros will be better this year than the team that dropped 111 games last season, but I don’t think they’ll get the win here. Confidence-6

7:10- Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays won yesterday 9-2 and now hand the ball to Alex Cobb as they face Drew Hutchinson who has been out of the Majors for almost two years.  The Rays rotation is absolutely stacked, and they’ll be tough to beat when they have this much of an advantage on the mound at least on paper. Confidence-7

7:35- Montreal Canadiens: Montreal has won five straight and eight of their last nine.  Even on the road, I think they’ll keep rolling as they face the Lightning looking to clinch a playoff spot. Confidence-5

8:05- St. Louis Blues: The Blues are 26-6-4 at home as they look to bounce back from a tough loss to the surging Stars.  Tonight, they host the Flyers who have dropped three of four and are 16-14-6 on the road. Confidence-4

8:05- Texas Rangers: Texas took a tough loss on Opening Day even though they beat up on Phillies ace Cliff Lee.  The Rangers rotation may be their achilles heel this season after a rash of injuries has depleted their ranks. Today, they have Martin Perez on the mound who I think is lined up for a good season. Look for them to get the win tonight. Confidence-4

8:10- Atlanta Braves: The Braves give the ball to Alex Wood tonight after dropping their opener to Milwaukee behind a great outing from Yovani Gallardo.  Coming off a great spring, Wood will face off with Kyle Lohse tonight as the Braves look to turn their luck around in Milaukee. They’ve lost nine of their last ten in Milwaukee, but I think they’ll get the win behind wood tonight. Confidence-5

8:10- Houston Rockets: The Rockets are in Brooklyn as three-point underdogs.  Houston may be without Dwight Howard, but they’ve won their last 14 against the Nets and had won five in a row overall before coming up just short against the Clippers their last time out. Brooklyn has been playing well at home but they don’t have the offense to keep up with the high-scoring Rockets.  If Howard plays, this game gets a bump in confidence, but assuming he doesn’t…Confidence-4

8:30- Dallas Mavericks: In a great Western Conference matchup, the Warriors are in Dallas for the start of their Texas swing as they face off with the Mavs and Spurs on back-to-back nights.  Golden State has dropped two of three and are a little banged up.  Dallas is 25-13 at home and the home team has dominated this series in the recent matchups. Confidence-3

9:05- North Carolina wins or Single Digit Loss: UNC just knocked off South Carolina who was the one seed and now has to contend with a very strong two-seed as they take on Stanford. Ultimately, I think the Cardinal win, but this is way too many points to give to a very good Tar Heel team. Confidence-5

9:30- Minnesota Golden Gophers: It’s a Big 10-ACC showdown at Madison Square Garden in the second NIT Semi as the Gophers face the Seminoles.  Minnesota has won five of their last six with their one loss coming at the hands of suddenly-hot Wisconsin.  FSU has also been playing well, but they’ve been less impressive in their wins and had their issues away from home this season. It should be a good, close game, but I think the Big 10 was the best conference this season, so I’ll go with Minnesota. Confidence-4

9:40- San Francisco Giants: The Giants turn to Matt Cain as he starts what he hopes will be a bounceback campaign after his struggles last year.  The D-Backs have played three games already this season but are still looking for their first win. Confidence-6

10:05- New York Rangers: New York visits Vancouver in a matchup of two teams battling to get into the playoffs.  The Canucks are fading fast, though, while the Rangers are surging and should get Henrik Lundqvist back between the pipes for this one.  New York won their previous meeting this season and is in much better form coming into this matchup. Confidence- 5 1/2

10:05- Phoenix Coyotes: The Coyotes had been rolling before a ugly performance Saturday when they collapsed against the Wild.  They’ll look to bounce back against the Jets who are coming off a collapse of their own in Anaheim.  Winnipeg has struggled this year on the road (16-18-4) and are 1-2-1 on their current trip while the Coyotes are always a strong home team (21-13-3). Confidence-5

10:45- Lakers win or Single-Digit Loss: LA hosts the Blazers who may once again be without superstar LaMarcus Aldridge. Either way, I wouldn’t give the points here since the Blazers are much better at home than they are on the road and the Lakers beat Portland in Portland in their last meeting and have upset the Knicks and Suns in their last two home games by significant margins. The Lakers aren’t usually the spoiler underdogs, but they’ve been playing the role well lately and should at least keep this game competetive. Confidence-4
