Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin removes his name from Marquette consideration

Well, it looks like it’s on to the next one for the Marquette Golden Eagles athletic department as they search for a new men’s head basketball coach as they’ve been spurned once again, this time by Tennessee Volunteers head coach Cuonzo Martin, 247 Sports is reporting.

As first reported on 247Sports, Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martinremoved his name from consideration for the head coaching job at Marquette, a source close to the situation said early Tuesday morning.

This news comes right on the heels of Marquette being turned down last week by VCU head coach Shaka Smart after they were said to have offered him a “lucrative” deal.

Martin led the Tennessee team on an amazing run down the final stretch of the season after a rough regular season in which some Vols fans were calling for his firing. They came within seconds of making the Elite 8, showing the promise that this program has under Martin.

Now it appears they’ll see how far they can keep progressing with Martin staying.

As for Marquette, it might be time to get on the phone with Ben Howland.
