Jana Cepelova upsets Serena Williams at Family Circle Cup

Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova, ranked 78th in the world, pulled off a monumental upset in the second round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday night, defeating Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4.

Williams complimented Cepelova after their match:

“I think she was a great counterpuncher today, and she hit a lot of balls back, and I really knew nothing about her game.

“All credit to her, She did well today. ..I made the transition many, many times before. So there’s really no excuse.”

Williams, who just won the Sony Open, also said she’s a bit fatigued due to her rigorous schedule:

“I’m really just dead. I need some weeks off where I don’t think about tennis and kind of regroup. I’ve had a long couple of years, and I’m really a little fatigued.”

The win was Cepelova’s first over an opponent ranked in the top 15 in the world.
