Cheick Kongo moved to Bellator six months ago citing his need for a change of pace. Since then, Kongo has defeated two opponents in a row, winning the Season 9 Heavyweight tournament. Tomorrow night, Kongo will take on undefeated Heavyweight champion, Vitaly Minakov in the main event of Bellator 115.
‘I am feeling so good for this fight’ Kongo told FanSided. ‘I am used to keeping everything so secret, but I am feeling perfect, nothing to hide before this fight. I am ready to fight and I have been ready. I have had a great camp, in fact it was perfect. Honestly, I can not wait to fight and become the champion.’
Kongo, in his seven year run inside the UFC was never granted a UFC title shot. Now just two fights into his Bellator career, Kongo has the opportunity to become the Heavyweight champion.
‘You know, everyone when they start MMA wants to become a champion. They want to be the best in their division,’ Kongo said. ‘Right now, I have the chance to prove I am the best in the Bellator Heavyweight division, and I will do that on Friday night.’
Vitaly Minakov is 13-0 in his MMA career, and has finished his last 10 opponents. Kongo is aware of how dangerous an opponent Minakov is, but he thinks he will have the edge come Friday night.
‘Minakov is the king right now, but I came to dethrone him and I will do my best to do so,’ Kongo said confidently. ‘He is a big guy, he is tough, and he has a really good record, but I don’t think he is ready for five rounds. I am ready for five rounds if needed, and I will win.’
If Kongo does in fact become the Bellator Heavyweight champion tomorrow night, I asked him if he would be interested in a quick turnaround fight for the Bellator pay per view card in May.
‘Yea for sure, I would love to fight on the pay per view,’ Kongo said emphatically. ‘I am really focused on the task at hand, but of course I want to be on that card. Everybody wants to be on those types of cards. Fans get to watch me for free this Friday, so that is good for business. If they want me on the pay per view, I think that would be good as well.’
