Team Alpha Male and Duane Ludwig cut ties two weeks ago on amicable terms. Ludwig, a former UFC fighter himself, took over the head coaching position at Team Alpha Male in December of 2012. What resulted was the best year Team Alpha Male ever had.
Urijah Faber, TJ Dillashaw, Joseph Benavidez, and Chad Mendes all had a fantastic 2013 campaigns. inside the UFC. The team also introduced TUF winner, Chris Holdsworth, and exciting prospect, Andre Fili into the UFC.
Since Ludwig’s departure, Team Alpha Male has been on the hunt for a new head coach. Urijah Faber, in a recent interview with BloodyElbow, discussed Ludwig’s absence and the search for a new head coach:
I think it’s good. There was a lot of publicity that came with that whole thing with Duane, but this team has been building for 11 years now. We were looking for a coach, and he came in and everyone made a big deal about it. We learned a lot from him, and from his style, but we need someone that is invested in the long term.
It wasn’t anything really. We never signed a contract or anything. No (I wasn’t surprised he wasn’t here long term), not once I got him in the area. He’s got his own mind, and has his own agendas, so I completely understand it. It was an opportunity for him to get exposure that he really needed, but it is what it is, really.
As for Ludwig’s replacement, Faber said there is no shortage of candidates:
There’s a lot of candidates for a replacement. We have like 20-plus now. Since I’ve been here in the Philippines I haven’t really had the chance to focus on that yet. I have a list of everybody we are looking at, but we are going to take our time. There’s no rush.
A lot of people don’t know, is that we’ve had the same structure in the team for a long time. When we brought a coach in, it was us adapting him to our system. So we’ll continue our system, figure out the best fit when we bring someone in.
TJ Dillashaw will fight for the UFC Bantamweight title at UFC 173 against Renan Barao. Duane Ludwig will be in his corner for that fight.
