Charlie Blackmon makes history with six hit day for Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies have four players competing for one spot on their roster: the starting center field gig. Charlie Blackmon, sporting a spectacular beard, appeared to be the favorite heading into the team’s home opener on Friday afternoon.

Putting himself in the Major League Record books certainly stands to help his case. Blackmon went 6-6 with three doubles, a home run, and 5 RBI as the Rockies cruised to a 12-2 victory. The only blemish on his day was a caught stealing.

In the entire history of Major League Baseball, Blackmon’s name stands alone when it comes to the accomplishment of having six hits with three doubles and one home run in a single game. It’s a unique stat to be sure, but when you consider how long baseball has been around and how many strange things have happened over the game’s long history, anytime a player can say he was only person ever to do something, it’s special.
