Fresh off of the comments by Gina Carano where she stated that “the time is now” for her return to mixed martial arts and her acknowledgement that a meeting would be coming with UFC president Dana White next week to discuss her fighting future, the UFC head honcho has responded.
White appeared to be surprised that the information became public knowledge ahead of their meeting, but he did confirm to MMAjunkie.com that Carano was accurate.
“Interesting, I didn’t see that one coming,” White told MMAjunkie. “I’m meeting with her next week. That’s true.”
With no big name opponents for current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, the company has been looking for someone that could come in and challenge the champ, while creating plenty of buzz that would result in a high number of pay-per-view buys.
Invicta FC champion Cris Cyborg and Legacy FC champion Holly Holm are the two names that have been floating around, but the fact remains that Carano would be the biggest draw that could attract fans that would not generally be interested in watching a UFC fight.
The only question about Carano is whether or not she would be able to make 135 pounds, but she seems dedicated to a return and it will be interesting to see what comes as a result of her meeting with White next week.
