He was supposed to start on Opening Day, but a week after was good enough for the Mets’ Jon Niese.
The lefty carried a two-hit shutout through five innings before loading the bases and allowing a sacrifice fly to Joey Votto in the 6th. The club was looking for Niese to pitch 90-95 pitches after pitching 76 in his minor league rehab start.
Niese finished with 90 pitches in 5.2 innings pitched, having allowed 6 hits and two earned runs. He struck out four while walking one.
