Lexi Thompson opened with a lackluster 73, powered into contention with a second round 64, kept it going with a third round 69, and cruised to victory with a final round 68 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship for her first major victory.
Thompson began the final round tied with Michelle Wie, and opened a five-shot lead on Wie and Se Ri Pak after a four-under 32 on the front nine.
On the back nine, Wie fought back with birdies on 11 and 14 to cut Thompson’s lead to three strokes.
Although Thompson stalled on the back with nine straight pars, she forced Wie to continue making birdies to have a chance.
Wie’s last chance came on the seventeenth hole, but she fanned her tee shot to the right on the 186-yard par-3. Thompson effectively sealed the deal by hitting her tee shot to 10-feet. Wie failed to get up-and-down for par, and Thompson two-putted to take a four-shot lead to the famous 18th hole at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club.
Thompson finished with a par to win by three strokes (-14) over Wie (-11). The Kraft is Thompson’s fourth career victory on the LPGA. Wie is still in search of her first major championship.
After signing her scorecard, Thompson and her crew jumped into Poppie’s Pond to make the victory official.
Stacy Lewis finished in third place at seven-under total. Cristie Kerr and Se Ri Pak finished tied for fourth place at six-under total.
