When the New York Jets signed Michael Vick earlier this offseason, many thought it was done with the intent to give him the starting quarterback job. But according to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini, the Jets want Smith to be their starter and it will take a rather painful preseason for Smith to lose his grip on the job.

"“They want Geno to be the guy. He would have to have a really bad preseason to lose it [his starting job].”"

Few are more tapped into the Jets than Cimini, so his opinion is quite worthwhile. That said, Smith is going to be playing with a lot of pressure and presumably will be looking over his shoulder constantly. If the Jets really wanted Smith to the be the starter, they probably shouldn’t have brought in such a name quarterback as a quarterback controversy with Vick is inevitable.

Still, the Jets are saying all the right things in regards to Geno. Should be interesting to see if those words hold true come this Fall.
