Texas Rangers activate Yu Darvish, option Nick Martinez

The Texas Rangers opened up the year without their top pitcher in Yu Darvish. Darvish was added to the 15-day disabled list with some discomfort in his neck but it looks like he’s ready to get back to the starting rotation.

He’ll pick up his first start of the year against the Tampa Bay Rays today, so Rangers fans should be very excited to see him back on the mound. The right handed ace posted a solid 2.83 ERA and struck out 277 batters which was the leagues best. Darvish is no doubt an early favorite to win the American League Cy Young award this season.

He’s one of my favorite pitchers to watch whenever he takes the mound.

With Darvish back with the Major League squad, the Texas Rangers have optioned right handed pitcher Nick Martinez to Triple-A Round Rock. Martinez was charged with three earned runs over six innings of work against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in his Major League debut.

I’m sure the team would have like to keep him in the starting rotation, but there’s no room for him on the Major League roster. If he performs well during the first couple months of the season, he could find himself back in the rotation.
