Baltimore Orioles’ center fielder Adam Jones, along with the other participants in today’s game between the Orioles and the New York Yankees, were forced to put things on hold when two fans ran onto the field.
Jones was outspoken about his frustration with that behavior from fans after the game, likely verbalizing the way a number of players feel when these things happen (quotes from the Baltimore Sun):
I think it’s idiotic for people to run on the field, and I think the punishment needs to be a lot harsher, and they should let us have a shot to kick them with our metal spikes on because it’s stupid. You look like an [idiot] when you run on the field.”
It has often been said that the best remedy for these situations would be to let the players handle these morons themselves. That’s not going to happen, of course, for any number of reasons, but it is interesting to hear that Jones and perhaps other players feel the same way.
And while you might think that a physical punishment doled out by professional athletes might effectively serve as a deterrent for future morons, well…they are still the morons who thought it was a good idea in the first place, you know? Not sure logic like that resonates with them.
