Florida Gators' Will Muschamp on running QBs: 'That’s the dilemma'

In the fourth game of the season last year, the Florida Gators lost starting quarterback Jeff Driskel just three games into the season.

In a 31-17 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers on September 21, Driskel broke his fibula and was forced to have surgery.

On Tuesday, Muschamp was asked about running quarterbacks and the injuries they endure because of consistently being hit.

He brought up former Texas Longhorns’ quarterback Vince Young and former Florida Gators’ quarterback Tim Tebow, who Muschamp had to game plan against when he was a defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers.

Muschamp brought up a specific situation when the Tigers were able to stop Tebow, mostly because of all of the hits head had already taken.

“But that’s the dilemma you get in as a coach,” Mushamp explained via Chris Vannini of 24/7 Sports. “How many times are you letting this guy carry the ball, because of how many hits he’s taking? There’s no question we had success in that game, defensively at Auburn, because of the previous week. That’s something we talk about and go into each game with a plan of what we’re going to do, but you’ve always got to develop those backups.”

Driskel is again healthy this spring and projects as the Gators’ starting quarterback in 2014.
