Gus Malzahn wants Auburn Tigers to be more physical

The Auburn Tigers fell just short of a national championship, allowing Jameis Winston to throw a touchdown to Kelvin Benjamin to give the Florida State Seminoles a 34-31 lead with just 13 seconds to play, but they turned a 3-9 season (and 0-8 in the SEC) into a 12-2 season with a win over the rival Alabama Crimson Tide and an SEC Championship in head coach Gus Malzahn’s first season.

Malzahn is trying to get to the next level and win a title and he believes his squad needs to be more physical.

“The big thing is we needed to be more physical,” Malzahn told Joel A. Erickson of AL.com. “As a group, we’ve got to play with great effort on both sides of the football. Our standard’s high, and so our coaches were very strict on our guys with assignments, with loafs and everything that goes with it.”

Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes has recently expressed his displeasure with his group’s performance, which may have helped set Malzahn off.
