The Cincinnati Reds, off to a rough start in 2014, might have to wait even longer to have right-handed starting pitcher Mat Latos back in the rotation.
Working his way back from an off-season that included minor operations on his knee and elbow, Latos was scheduled to make a rehab start in Louisville on Tuesday. Unfortunately for him and for the Reds, elbow inflammation forced the team to scratch him from that start.
Mat threw his bullpen [on Sunday] and had some irritation in his elbow. He had some inflammation and tenderness there in the elbow and he wasn’t able to get through to the point where he could pitch. We’re taking the conservative route to reschedule once we get that soreness out of there.”
That conservative route has no date on it, at least not now, and so the Reds will have to figure out how to keep from drowning with this setback in addition to some dings to their bullpen and a lineup that looks a bit thinner than people expected entering the season. Latos is coming off a solid 2013 campaign in which he went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 32 starts.
