There was hope from a handful of Major League teams this past offseason that Johan Santana would be ready come Opening Day. Unfortunately, that proved itself to be impossible once teams actually saw Santana throw, which scared most away. But not the Baltimore Orioles who decided to take a lottery ticket on the former ace.
Santana can still pitch and do so rather effectively – maybe not at the clip he once did – but he’s still solid and for a cheap price, there wasn’t any reason the Orioles shouldn’t have taken a chance on him. The risk was small and the reward is promising.
Sadly, the Orioles are still a few months away from seeing that potential reward but so far so good for Santana’s progress as the pitcher was able to throw a simulated game on Monday without incident.
Buck was impressed with the report in Johan Santana’s sim game yesterday. Said he showed good velocity.
Santana is still rebuilding his arm strength from a previous surgery and continues to prepare for a Summer debut with Baltimore.
