Nieky Holzken forced out of GLORY 16 title defense with shoulder injury

On Tuesday morning, some huge news was announced in the kickboxing world as Golden Glory TV announced that GLORY welterweight champion Nieky Holzken has been forced to withdraw from his title defense at GLORY 16 against Marc de Bonte (86-11-1, 28 KO’s) due to a shoulder injury.

GLORY and Holzken (84-11, 44 KO’s)  confirmed the unfortunate news shortly after the report first surfaced, and they immediately named a replacement. Holzken has been replaced by Karapet Karapetyan (43-9-2, 4 KO’s).

“On January 6 I suffered some injury in a car accident. That was why I wasn’t able to fight at GLORY 14 ZAGREB in March as originally planned,” Holzken said in a statement. “I have been having some shoulder trouble and I have been trying to get around it by fighting mostly in southpaw stance, because I can fight from both stances.

“But it became too painful and when I went for an MRI scan they said there is still signs of damage. I was told that I need to rest my shoulder or face the possibility of ending my career early.”

GLORY 16 DENVER takes place on Saturday May 3 at the 1ST BANK CENTER in Denver, Colorado.
