Former Kentucky player Rex Chapman, who currently works as an analyst, tweeted out that he was hearing head coach John Calipari was headed to the Los Angeles Lakers after the season no matter what the outcome of the game was. That led to both the Lakers and Calipari responding to it, with both sides downplaying any talks and the Lakers denying the report.
On Tuesday morning, Chapman went on the Dan Patrick Show and stood by his report.
“One was, win or lose, [Calipari] is going to the Lakers,” said Chapman, as transcribed by Business Insider Sports. “then at halftime I was told [by a second source], ‘We’re talking to the Lakers and of course we have to listen.’”
Another person’s anonymous sources are always had to trust, but Chapman certainly does value these sources. The use of “we” by the second one implies that is someone with connections to Calipari, his agent even possibly. If it was his agent, it could all just be little leaks built off a rumor to try and force Kentucky to give Calipari a raise, and with two National Championship game appearances now that seems like a no-brainer.
