Ryan Roberts to start for Red Sox tonight

Ryan Roberts is practically hopping off of the plane and onto the field for the Red Sox.

A day after being signed to be a third baseman for Boston, Ryan Roberts will be in the lineup Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers at the hot corner. Manager John Farrell went on MLB Network Radio to discuss what Roberts’ expectations will be and why they signed him to replace Will Middlebrooks instead of going internally.

Farrell said that Roberts will be splitting time in a platoon with Jonathan Herrera at third base. The Red Sox had the option of bringing up prospect Garin Cecchini to man third, but while Farrell is high up on the prospect, thinking he’ll be up sooner rather than later, the skipper felt the team needed more lineup balance on the right hand side of the plate.

The Red Sox send Felix Doubront to the hill against Martin Perez and the Rangers at 6:10 EST.
