The 2014 Pacific Rim Championships do not officially begin competition until Wednesday, but they have already lost one of the top competitors who was forced to withdraw due to an injury.
According to USA Gymnastics, world all-around champion Simone Biles was forced out of the competition after aggravating a shoulder injury during the first full day of training in Canada.
“Simone was ready to compete, but her shoulder started bothering her again during training so she is withdrawing as a precaution,” said Marta Karolyi, the women’s team national coordinator for the U.S. women’s team, in a statement. “We want to be careful given the upcoming schedule for 2014 because Simone is an important part of the team.”
Biles, 17, was also forced out of the American Cup with a shoulder injury. She will be replaced by Peyton Ernst on the U.S. squad for the Pacific Rim Championships.
Competition will be held at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
