Earlier this year, former Missouri Tigers defensive end Michael Sam came out about his sexuality and he is now aiming to become the first openly gay athlete in the National Football League.
Following in Sam’s footsteps, UMass guard Derrick Gordon recently announced that he was gay which made him the first openly gay basketball player in Division I basketball.
After hearing of the news, a representative of Sam, who is currently preparing for the 2014 NFL Draft, discussed Gordon’s announcement with TMZ and expressed their support for Gordon.
“We’re so happy for him. This is going to happen more and more because it’s now accepted by society,” Sam’s rep told TMZ.com. The rep also said that Sam is planning to reach out to Gordon so he can offer up “words of encouragement.”
Gordon, who is a sophomore, was a starter at UMass and he becomes the latest athlete to break down barriers in the sports world.
Hopefully Gordon and Sam will serve as great examples for others who feel they need to hide who they truly are, as we all move forward and progress to become a more accepting world.
