Rousimar Palhares became the World Series of Fighting Welterweight champion after defeating Steve Carl by inverted heel hook in the first round in the main event of WSOF 9. It was an incredibly impressive performance by Palhares, who will take on fellow former UFC veteran, Jon Fitch at WSOF 11 in July.
Jon Fitch noted in a tweet once the Palhares matchup was announced that he agreed to fight in June, and no later. Speculation from that tweet was that Fitch did not want to fight Palhares. If you recall, when the WSOF added Palhares to the roster late last year, Fitch said that he would turn down a fight against Palhares because of his past transgressions in holding on to submissions too long.
I know that I’ll be ready. I can’t talk for nobody. He can say whatever he wants, what he thinks, what he feels. I know that I’m here working to hold that belt with me for a long time. If he wants to take it from me, I guarantee that it won’t be easy, he will have to fight. This belt won’t leave so soon from here.
The World Series of Fighting also announced that Josh Burkman will fight the winner of the Fitch/Palhares bout for the title next.
