The first of two Frozen Four games to be played on Thursday night saw the fall of a title favorite as the Boston College Eagles came into the game heavy favorites but couldn’t muster up enough to overcome the attack of the Union Dutchmen.
It was a back and forth barn burner to say the least as an early Boston College goal was answered by Union and that dance was done again to tie the game back up at 2-2 later in the game. But while the game had been back and forth to that point, a third period goal by Union made it a 3-2 and eventually a 4-2 game before Boston College could answer with a goal.
It wasn’t enough though as an empty net hat trick goal by Daniel Ciampini with just 1:09 left in the game sealed the deal for Union and clinched the major upset.
For the Dutchmen, it’s their first ever national championship berth and it’s one that comes after a miraculous run through the Frozen Four. It wasn’t long ago that Union was arriving at the Frozen Four for the first time in the school’s history but they’ve returned and concurred what they couldn’t the first time around.
A matchup against either the No. 1 seeded Minnesota Gophers or white hot North Dakota Sioux awaits the Union Dutchemen but the school has made it to the top of the college hockey mountain and all that is left is to knock off who ever meets them at the peak.
The national championship will be held on Saturday at 7:30pm ET on ESPN.
