Joe Torre issues statement regarding Michael Pineda pine tar incident, will talk to Yankees

Thursday night in the opening game of the series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, some controversy ensued when Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was discovered to have what looked like pine tar on his throwing hand. Since the Red Sox never called it into question, the umpires didn’t investigate and the Yankees went on to win the game while Pineda captured his first win of the season, 4-1.

The incident has been a hot topic of discussion on Friday, and Major League Baseball Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations–and legendary Yankees manager–Joe Torre issued the following:

“The umpires did not observe an application of a foreign substance during the game and the issue was not raised by the Red Sox. Given those circumstances, there are no plans to issue a suspension, but we intend to talk to the Yankees regarding what occurred.”

Many people have been wondering why the Red Sox didn’t point it out, but as some have reminded everyone, sometimes teams are hesitant to call out another player because their players are cheating themselves.

Nonetheless, it seems like Joe Girardi is about to receive a talking to from his old manager.
