Arsenal is trying to end their nine-year trophy drought with an FA Cup title, but their hopes took a big hit on Saturday. At Wembley Stadium against Wigan Athletic in the semi-finals, a bad challenge from Per Mertesacker on Callum McManaman gave Wigan a penalty kick.
In one angle it looks like he knocks the ball away but takes out his feet in the process.
Here is a reverse angle of the penalty, and it shows that McManaman was trying to pass to a teammate and a late challenge from Mertesacker.
For the penalty kick, Wigan’s Jordi Gómez stepped to the spot. He went to the left just out of the reach of goalie Lukasz Fabianski, who correctly guessed the direction. It is the only goal of the game so far and has Wigan leading late in the game.
