Being granted a spot in the London Marathon is notoriously difficult, with tens of thousands of applicants rejected each year. However, thanks to the power of technology — all hail technology! — the prestigious race will be a little more inclusive next year.
See, in 2015 you won’t even need to be in London to run the race. Nope, you can just download the “digital marathon” app from Paofit, hop on your treadmill with your iWhatever screen facing you, and “run” the entire course with a virtual avatar.
According to London Marathon race director Hugh Brasher, the digital marathon will almost be as good as the real thing:
“Imagine lining up in Greenwich and hearing the cheers of the crowd as you run past the famous London landmarks of the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace to the finish on The Mall, experiencing the unique atmosphere of the day without ever leaving your home or gym.”
The boring ol’ meatspace London Marathon will be held tomorrow. A non-virtual Mo Farah will be competing. You know, if you care about the real world.
