On Sunday evening, reports surfaced that San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport, after he made the very poor decision to indicate he had a bomb while in the security line.

Smith, who was checked in to a treatment facility for alcohol abuse during the 2013 season, reportedly became belligerent with police before being handcuffed and taken away.

The 49ers learned about the arrest as news began to spread, and issued a statement on the unfortunate news.

“We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith,” General Manager Trent Baalke said in the statement. “As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment.”

It’s a cookie cutter statement, but one that had to be made to acknowledge the arrest.

Smith is obviously facing serious trouble for the comments that he made — which anyone knows would be a terrible idea in any public place — and now he and the 49ers will have to deal with the consequences.
