Amare Stoudemire is a very well educated man who has numerous times over his career displayed his intellectualism and openness to knowledge. That however does not make him immune to saying stupid things and he uttered such a thing to Adam Zagoria before the New York Knicks game against the Chicago Bulls.
According to Zagoria, Stoudmire noted that he thought the Knicks — on paper — are the best team in the NBA.
“There could be a lot of changes, that’s the unknown factor,” Stoudemire said. Stoudemire added with a straight face: “On paper we might be the best team in the league.”
Stoudemire isn’t entirely wrong but he’s rather far from reality. It’s true that a roster with Carmelo Anthone, Tyson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr and Amare Stoudemire should be great but it wasn’t and hasn’t been. They may have flashy names on their roster but this 2013-14 campaign showed everyone that star power is only valuable if you have a proper captain manning the ship and with little leadership to be found New York, the Knicks crashed and burned very much unlike the team Stoudemire has described on paper.
