On Saturday night, “The Supernova From Moldova” Marina Shafir, who is one of the top women’s mixed martial arts prospects in the world, made her professional debut at Chaos at the Casino 4 at Hollywood Park Casino in Inglewood, California against Chandra Engel of Kansas City.
Shafir was 5-0 in her amateur record with all wins coming by way of first-round submission, and she continued that streak in her pro debut by winning at 1:57 of the first round by armbar.
Here is a video of Shafir having her hand raised for the first time, via Glendale Fighting Club teammate Jessamyn Duke:
Shafir was an assistant coach on season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter 18, and a training partner/best friend of UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. The two were once teammates on the U.S. judo team and the parallels to begin their mixed martial arts careers are impressive.
We will have to wait and see what the next step for Shafir is in her professional career, but the sky is the limit and she’s on the fast track to stardom.
