Former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman suing Nike for alleged trademark infringement

Former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman has apparently had it with Nike, who he claims has stolen his famed ‘Lights Out’ name.

Merriman, who became known for the moniker during his NFL days, revived the name in high school for knocking the lights out of opponents and apparently had apparently hoped to launch a Lights Out apparel line with Nike back in 2006/2007.

The deal never went anywhere, but Merriman alledges that Nike has used his ‘Lights Out’ trademark without his consent and is now suing them over it according to the Washington Post.

Former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman is suing Nike for trademark infringement and unfair competition over its Lights Out apparel line.

The suit, filed on behalf of Merriman’s Lights Out Holdings LLC, was filed in U.S. District Court on Monday.

The lawsuit says Merriman acquired the federal trademark rights for Lights Out in 2007.

Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowl linebacker and Defensive Rookie of the Year award winner played parts of six season for the San Diego Chargers and parts of three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He recently joined the WWE, something he’s been in training for during the past few months.
