This was supposed to be the year for JaVale McGee. He was finally anointed the starting center for Denver Nuggets after working with Hakeem Olajuwon all offseason working on his game. Things don’t always work out.
McGee was sidelined with a stress fracture in his left tibia after just five games and the recent success of Timofey Mozgov already has Nuggets coach Brian Shaw talking about competition for the starting job next year.
“I told JaVale even before he had season-ending surgery, ‘Timo’s coming for you. It’s not a given that anything is going to be handed to you when you come back.’ ” Shaw said. “Timo’s had his struggles, but he’s had his bright moments and he continues to work and continues to improve. JaVale is still a question mark. It’ll be a very interesting competition next season once everybody comes back healthy.”
McGee is expected to be back in time for the beginning of training camp, so it should be a nice long competition for the starting center spot.
