The Indiana Pacers may have had their struggles in the second half of this season, but they’ve still managed to come out on top. Indiana needed the Miami Heat to lose to the Washington Wizards on Monday night in order to clinch home court advantage in the playoffs and that’s exactly what happened.
With the Heart losing to the Wizards, the Pacers owing the tiebreakers between the two teams means that they No. 1 seed has been locked up with a game to go in the season.
What this means is that the Pacers have a harder road to the NBA Finals but should they reach the Conference Finals, they’ll own home court and enter the series with an advantage. Not having home court in the 2013 playoffs proved to be a fatal disadvantage as the Heat cleaned up the Pacers in the seventh game of their Conference Finals series and advanced to the NBA Finals.
There’s no saying the Pacers won’t again lose before getting to the NBA Finals, but if they get all the way through the Eastern Conference playoffs, they’ll be doing so on home court.
