Yankees Carlos Beltran on 1B: ‘Never again’

He didn’t want to do it, but in the scope of things there really wasn’t a choice.

Kelly Johnson was at third because Yangervis Solarte was at second because Brian Roberts was in an MRI tube. Dean Anna was at shortstop. Francisco Cervelli? He had just pulled his hamstring running down the first base line. Derek Jeter was on the bench. Ichiro Suzuki was on the bench, too, and if Girardi had asked HIM to play first?

If he said go to first, I might have told him I have a hurt leg.

MLB.com’s Barry Bloom says that the reaction from Carlos Beltran was about the same level of enthusiasm, but there was a willingness to go there. That was all Girardi needed and Beltran found himself wearing Cervelli’s first baseman’s mitt for the first time in his career.

It ended up being okay, but Beltran told reporters he was praying that the ball wouldn’t be hit towards him ever. “I hope I never have to do it again.”
