Arkansas State auctions off spring game coaching job for $11,700

Nick Bhardwaj, co-founder and CEO of Beyond Games, has won the auction to be the Arkansas State Red Wolves head coach for the team’s upcoming spring game, paying $11,700 for the privilege.

Bhardwaj told ESPN he’s excited for the unique opportunity:

“I dropped out of San Jose State and didn’t have a chance to enjoy the full college experience. Doing this, even for a day, is a way to make up for that.

“I can’t wait to fully engross myself in the process, to see how evaluating real-time data plays a role in exploiting opportunities. As a first-time CEO of a company, I also want to learn more about leadership and how Coach Anderson deals with what is in front of him.”

The auction was proposed by Blake Anderson, Arkansas State’s new football coach. Frankly, it’s a great idea. Outside of major programs like Texas and Florida State, spring games aren’t exactly the most thrilling of spectacles, so auctioning off coaching responsibilities is a great way to generate extra interest in a game many fans wouldn’t care about otherwise.
