Francisco Cervelli sat just past the first base line, but not because he was in shock of the call being argued by manager Joe Girardi.
The Yankees’ catcher/first baseman had pulled his hamstring running down the line. With Mark Teixeira already on the DL, Kelly Johnson manning the hot corner, and Derek Jeter needing an off day for his quad, the Yankees watched their only other experienced first baseman limp off the field with help. Carlos Beltran had to come in from right field to make his MLB debut at first base.
As Brian McCann was hit in the hand by a deflected HBP off of A.J. Pierzynski, the Yankees were in dire need of some other sort of depth. Joe Girardi had joked to the ESPN Baseball Tonight crew that shortstop Dean Anna was his emergency catcher, but he could not have dreamed that he actually might have to entertain that idea. Now, the Yankees are bringing up catching support.
John Ryan Murphy will be recalled from Triple-A to join the club on Tuesday. Murphy made his Major League debut with the Yankees last season, catching in 16 games for the club. During that time, he hit .154/.185/.192.
